First a sporting activity for the wealthy, this new means of locomotion quickly spread to a greater consuming public and a cry for better roads swept across the land. A WALKER'S GUIDE TO HARPERS FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA.A WALKER'S GUIDE TO HARPERS FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA. by Dave Gilbert.
See remnants from the past of this historically important town where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers come together to flow through a break, or "water gap" in ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here was the site of extensive water-powered and coal-fired factories, a federal armory, and a firehouse where John Brown and some brave followers attempted to start a movement they felt would speedily free America's enslaved humans. There is also the C&O Canal and its locks, which raised boats 605 feet in its 184 1/2 miles. Text includes the Robert Harper's ferry, too, which gave the place its name. Geologic aspects and natural trees are also covered, contributing to its scenic appeal. 28 photos, 11 maps, 80 pages.

YUKON RIVER STEAMBOATS: a Pictorial History. YUKON RIVER STEAMBOATS: a Pictorial History. by Stan Cohen Cohen. No other river on the continent has had such a long and diverse history of steamboating. The author has gathered photos and drawings from archives in the U.S. and Canada into the most complete collection yet published, from the elegant boats of the 1890s to the complete restoration of the "Klondike" that is on display at Whitehorse. Nowhere else on the continent was there such a proliferation of steamboats and for so long a period of time as on the Yukon River. The river was home to boats of one kind or another for close to 90 years, and the era did not end until 1955, long after the other river systems had switched to more economical means of river transportation. 8-1/2x11, 128 pages, 155 photos, 128 large-format pages.
